Eat Your Peas!

You're really just going to have to trust me on this one... or believe me when I say 3 out of 3 scrapbookers agree its really tasty!


Robin Miller's White Bean-Green Pea Gaucamole

2 cups frozen peas, thawed
1 cup canned white beans, drained
2-3 cloves garlic
2 tsp fresh lime juice
1 tsp ground cumin
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
salt and freshly ground black pepper

In a medium bowl, blender, or food processor, combine first 5 ingredients. Mash with a fork or process until as smooth or lumpy as you like. Fold in cilantro and season to taste w/ salt & pepper. Cover tightly and keep refrigerated up to 3 days.

Serve with chicken quesadillas or as dip, I like Baked Tostitos Scoops.

And if you're still hesitant I promise it does not taste a bit like peas!

Armadillidiidae

Now there's a vocab word for the day! Ok its just the scientific name of our little friend the Pillbug aka Roly-Poly aka... You know those cute little critters that roll right into a ball when you poke at 'em or pick 'em up.

So I got "the question"* again from my little ones... Mommy, what do Roly-Polys eat? Well, I really don't know.. would you like me to look it up on the computer when we get home? Yes. Ok.

This makes sense now that I think of it: They eat decaying plant matter and thrive in damp areas because they breathe through gill-like organs. There are always tons of them at one of our favorite parks, they are down under the damp wood chips... just eating away until we come along to poke at 'em.

Pet Cricket

This morning I heard a bit of a commotion from Cali, when I came to see the problem she told me there was a big bug in her bathroom but she "was brave" and looked close enough to see it was a "grasshopper".. Really, it was a cricket but she still insists on calling it a grasshopper. I say still because when I asked the kids how I should go about catching him Cali quickly suggested our bug jar. So yes I went all the way out to the garden, got the jar, and came back in to catch him. He got to hang out with them for a bit then I suggested we at least put the jar in the garage when we left for the morning. Well in the meantime Cali has named him "Grassy" and he is still alive & well in the bug jar out in the garage. I figured I better look up what they eat so he can at least live a few more days and as it turns out, pet crickets sound pretty simple...

1) Get them a jar (at the least) or a small aquarium with a tight lid
2) They are omnivorous; feed them fruits, vegetables, cat/dog food, and oats
3) They will drown in a dish of water so provide water via a small wet rag, sponge or cotton pad instead
