Waste-Free Lunches aka Bento

Since elementary school I have been concerned about the environment. I was the kid who really perked up and paid attention when they talked about recycling, planting trees, etc. It pained me to throw things in the trash unless it was absolutely necessary. I was a member of Club Earth in high school and wrote my college thesis about recycling. When we lived in TX I collected all my recyclables for about a month before driving them to the bins located on post. They piled up in my pantry and garage and filled up the back of my Trailblazer. It makes me happy to know I have influenced several friends over the years to start recycling and they now enjoy it!!

Now I have curbside recycling pickup, yay! But if you remember correctly, recycling is just one third of the triangle. There's also the equally important, "reduce" and "reuse."

Here's a catchy tune to remind you...

Recently, a mom at our favorite local nature center mentioned her son's lunchbox, I forget how we even got on the subject but I was intrigued. She explained to me that her son has a Planet Box and admitted it was on the pricey side. I could only kind of picture what she was talking about so I got home and Googled it. They are really quite cool, you can check them out at www.planetbox.com

She had a thing against plastic, but I don't necessarily, so I spent the next couple hours over the next couple days researching other lunch packing options. I quickly came across the term bento. Bento is the Japanese term for a "single-portion, home-packed meal" which are typically quite carefully and artfully prepared (wikipedia). Now most of the Moms I Googled weren't packing sushi and rice balls for their Kindergarteners but the creativity in their lunch prep was definitely impressive and bento is the inspiration. I liked both the artistic, creative fun of the lunches plus the benefit of reducing waste in the lunchroom.

I especially liked easylunchboxes.com and found tons of inspiration on her fan site. My favorites so far from that list are Another Lunch and Wendolonia. If you've never given any thought to how many plastic baggies and snack wrappers are thrown into your childrens' trash cans after lunchtime, now would be the time. There are so many fun, creative, dishwasher safe(!) options out there. Oh and that's just one reason these awesome moms are packing such fun lunches! Check them out, there is a lot to learn about health, nutrition, and the special love your child will feel opening their lunch box each day.

I did purchase the easylunchboxes and probably have used them every day since they arrived, often by the kids' request. I should add that I do not even pack school lunches... yet. I have until August for that, but we do love to have outdoor picnics and pack healthy snacks for when we're out and about. Look forward to photos of my fun lunches and snacks in my next post.

Re-Cap: September 2010

To make up for my long hiatus I will do a quick photo recap of each month I missed out on.

SEPTEMBER

More construction. We call this "Phase 2", got the first swing up and you can see Cali was instantly on it while David continued to work.

Spent a lot of evenings and weekends going on nature walks, exploring the area.. Huey too. This is called a "gentle lead" (to keep him from pulling) not a muzzle, although people often ask "Does he bite?" To which I laugh because Huey is the most laid-back dog you could meet. Can't you tell he is smiling?

Diego learned how to browse Amazon.com for toys, but thankfully not how to buy them!

Both kids started soccer for the first time! There is a wonderful program here perfectly geared to their ages. It is more of a fun soccer playtime than following all the rules and playing serious games. They both loved it and will be starting the Spring session here soon.

Met this parrot named Macy at a Festival. Funny to the kids because we had a neighbor girl in TX named Macy too.

Cali turned 5, she was incredibly excited about it! She had a white cake with pink marshmallow frosting. We also celebrated with friends and neighbors at a nearby park.

Re-Cap: August 2010

To make up for my long hiatus I will do a quick photo recap of each month I missed out on.

AUGUST

Happy in her new room, although this was before it got painted seriously pink.

With the inside of the house mostly squared away, David could not wait to get started on this project! Just wait til you see how it turns out!!

While the big construction is under way, the kids have a brand new monkey bar/climbing dome to play on. We cashed in all our change jars before the move and splurged on this for our new back yard.

Cali's first day of school. Pre-K, 5 days a week, 6 hours a day. Also, here is your first peek at our new house... the front porch!

With Cali at school, Diego and I get to play. This is Allora, her big sister is also in school. These two are either playing really well together or fighting like an old married couple!

A first glance inside our new home. The windows are one of the top reasons we loved this house. Did I mention we never saw it in person before we bought it?! This picture makes me laugh because D was telling his Daddy "Be very patient... I'm going to jump on you!"

What Happened to my Blog??

My friend and fellow blogger Beth pointed out on Facebook today that it seemed many of her friends had gotten slack in their blogging and some (myself included) had quit completely. Here are the top 3 reasons I stopped blogging:

1. My husband returned from his 2nd year-long deployment to Iraq and we've been enjoying and appreciating the time we have together before he has to go again.

2. When he returned he decided he wanted an iPhone, he said if I liked it he'd get me one too. Within the first day I said "Yes, I want one!" With the convenience of Facebook and email on my iPhone I rarely use the home desktop computer anymore and haven't found a convenient way to blog from my phone yet.

3. We moved across the country in July and that was quite stressful/busy/time-consuming.

That being said, I'm sure I could manage to find a few minutes of "free" time and return to the blogging world. Especially now that I know I've been missed (and not just by Beth).

Forever In Blue Jeans

Sorry there just wasn't a very flattering way to take this picture. This is what I get for being a nature lover and tromping around in the woods geocaching...

I'm assuming Poison Oak. I am treating it with Tecnu but it has been lingering. The original spot was on my other ankle but it spread. Growing up in Alaska I have no knowledge of poisonous plants, or snakes, or scorpions, or killer spiders for that matter. So I certainly have "learned something new" this past week. And yes, thankfully it is only on me and not the kids.

14 of 52 & Island Vacation Mix

Forever In Blue Jeans
A multi-tasking post for you today... my weekly photo plus a recipe all in one!

Island Vacation Mix
disclaimer: this is more of a "treat" than a healthy snack

2-1/2 cups Corn Chex
2-1/2 cups Rice Chex
2 cups macadamia nuts
1/4 cup butter, cubed
4 tbsp sugar
1 cup flaked coconut
1 6oz pkg dried pineapple, chopped
1 cup white chocolate chips

FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY (I didn't!)
In large microwave safe bowl, combine cereal and nuts ONLY. In small microwave safe bowl combine sugar and butter, microwave uncovered until melted and sugar dissolves (1-2 minutes on HIGH). Pour butter mixture over cereal mixture and stir to coat. Cook cereal mixture on HIGH for 2 minutes, stirring once. Now add the coconut, microwave on HIGH for 2 more minutes, stirring once. Spread onto waxed paper to cool. Once it is completely cool you can stir in the pineapple and white chips. Store in an airtight container.

How I Feel

Been in a fog of seasonal allergy misery lately. Haven't been to the doc this season so I'm probably not taking enough of or the right combo of pharmaceuticals to treat it. Just wanted to let my loyal readers know why the posts were coming in slow and lackluster these days.

Did a search on Photobucket for "allergies" and this came up, pretty good representation of how I feel lately. I'm sure you'd be surprised to know that despite the misery, Spring is actually my favorite season and I love seeing all the new leaf buds and wildflowers everywhere and I spend at least some part of every day outside "enjoying" it.

Forever In Blue Jeans

Last week my friend Maria took pictures of me on my frog-catching quest. That was a really fun day! If you missed it you can see the kids enjoying the adventure here.

This week we had an Easter storytime with a little parade and egg hunt, they had us wear or "Sunday Best" so I actually got dressed up and both kids told me I looked "pretty" awww. Although its been nice and sunny all week it has also been awfully windy so went for and indoor lunch/playdate at the good ol' Chic-Fil-a afterwards. They have such great service... Cali knocked down one of the kid meals and all the fries fell on the floor, before I even got it picked up a guy came over to help clean it and said they were already working on replacing it... all we needed was new fries but they gave us a complete new meal, toy and all.

Funny thing about this picture... you notice her poking her ear? She was telling me it "itched". Well, after nap she had a fever so I called the doc and went in this morning to find out she has a double ear infection. She says it doesn't even hurt!

Forever In Blue Jeans

Of all the fun things we did this past week, I don't have myself pictured doing any of them (other than the 5K) so I made sure to snap a photo of myself riding the bike to the park this afternoon. Diego was in the bike trailer and Cali rode her own bike, with her baby along for the ride of course.

First 5K...

since having kids! My parents brought me up as a "Runner". I ran many many miles throughout my childhood and started doing 10K & 5k races in elementary school. I even completed a few half marathons and one 17-miler. In High School I was on the track & cross-country teams and continued to jog on and off since then. After I had Cali I got a single jogger and when D came along shortly after I called good ol' Dad to help me buy a snazzy double jogger so I could continue to be the Runner he raised me to be :)

This weekend I finally ran a road race again, stroller, 75+ lbs of kid and all! I finished the 3.1 miles in 35:12 - it sure felt good to hear all the positive comments from everyone I passed by. Even all the High School football players they had stationed along the race course were impressed!

I could have a picnic 5 days a week if weather permitted and we've been having a lot more nice weather here lately.

Forever In Blue Jeans

On Monday the kids were about to drive me crazy and we'd just been stuck inside for too long. I made an impromptu decision we just had to get out of the house and not to any of the usual places either. We went to a really fun indoor play area and had hours of fun while eating great food too! I even got a few extra hugs out of the deal :)

Forever In Blue Jeans

On our one sunny day last weekend, we got out and played at a park and threw rocks in the creek nearby. We've been back inside ever since with more wet, cold, windy weather...and now the forecast is calling for 100% chance of SNOW tomorrow... all day long!

Building projects together at Lowe's. This one was much, much simpler than the fire trucks! I can't tell you what this is though because we are sending one to Daddy for his birthday.
